A Modern Construction Corporation

Angelo Tomasso, Sr. saw himself as blessed with great opportunity.
Angelo wanted to create a lasting reputation as a quality builder.

Foundation

In 1910, 17 year old Angelo Tomasso Sr. arrived in New York from Italy.  Angelo served in the United States Army and later worked in railroad construction.  Traveling north with his work for the railroad, Angelo made his way to Hartford, Connecticut and was hired as a laborer with the Hartford Electric Company.

In 1923, with one piece of equipment, a steam shovel, Angelo founded Angelo Tomasso, Inc. in New Britain, CT.  That same year Angelo landed his first big job excavating foundations for the Fafnir Bearing Company. Angelo was aggressive, driven, and opportunistic.  He saw himself as blessed with opportunity and he wanted to create a lasting reputation as a quality builder.  Angelo did not take success for granted. Those who worked with him would describe his unrelenting stamina, countless hours of hard work and remarkable accomplishments.

Among the lore of Angelo Tomasso Sr. is the construction of the Hartford County Building foundation.  The contract was to be awarded to the first on-site.  Angelo drove his steam shovel overnight from New Britain to the job site and won the contract.  Angelo's reputation grew and so did his company.

As the years passed Angelo Tomasso bought a new steam shovel as each of his four sons was born.  His early accomplishments included:

  • The construction of the first section of the Taconic Parkway.

  • The addition of quarry operations and a concrete plant to his company.

  • The original construction of Brainard Airport in Hartford.

New Beginning

In 1968, the third generation of the Tomasso family, William, Michael, Paul and James formed the Tunxis Management Company, a real estate management firm.  With their experience at Angelo Tomasso, Inc. and subsequent to the formation of Tunxis Management, they established TBI Construction Company, LLC.  Today the two firms employ about 200 people.

TBI's experience grew over the years, finding opportunities through Tunxis Management's growing portfolio and the family's extensive background in highway construction.  In the late 1980s, TBI's focus became the construction of larger, more challenging projects in the public sector.

In September of 2004 TBI completed additions and renovations to the Waterbury Performing Arts Magnet School, Palace Theater and Parking Garage.   Also completed recently are the additions and renovations to New Britain Schools.

Other completed projects include the renovation of the New Britain City Hall, the Government Center Parking Garage in New Britain, and the Liberty Square Government Center, also in New Britain, CT.
